UNITY Capsule Collection
As a part of the UNITY Collection, ONCHEK set out to bring something new to the table. Partnering with the artisanal footwear genius, Shem Paronelli, the brand collaborated to bring you the N-100 Soccer Shoe. Playing on Shem’s classic N-100 style, while mimicking the traditional soccer boot, it uniquely stands out by an ankle-hugging fit, a small foldable tongue, minimalistic yet strong trimmed edges and a simplistic vamp shoe lace threading. Canvased by oiled nubuck leather, it features an elongated shoe tongue that can be styled tucked in for tailored looks or pulled out for casual day looks.
So, how did this nuanced shoe come to be? For the N-100 Soccer Shoe, we took a page out of history…
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and has been played in almost every country across many generations. Even though the game of soccer is thought to date all the way back to the 2nd and 3rd century BC, the first soccer boot didn’t originate until sometime around the 1500’s.
In fact, King Henry VIII is credited as having the first pair of soccer boots made by shoemaker Cornelius Johnson around 1525. Although they greatly differ in style from the soccer shoes that we have come to know today, King Henry’s soccer boots were uniquely crafted. Originally ankle high and made of rigid leather, the boot reflected minimalistic nuances that you can see reflected in our N-100 Soccer Shoe.
As the game evolved and became much more popular in the late 1800’s, the demand for better soccer boots began to increase. Soccer boots made of all leather had a tendency to become very heavy in rain. It was then that wearing soccer “boots” made a shift to the more traditional “slipper” styles we modeled the N-100 after today. Designed for players who wanted a soccer shoe that was better designed and more comfortable, the evolution of the shoe inspired many athletic shoes we know and love now.
Continuing on into the 1900s, manufacturers began to produce lighter soccer boots that allowed players to focus on kicking and controlling the soccer ball on a mass scale. Soccer boots began to focus on the ability to enhance a player’s skill rather than just for protective qualities.
By the 1970’s the materials that were used to produce soccer boots started to evolve. No longer was regular leather the only choice for making soccer boots. Synthetic materials came into the picture to replace soles allowing the soccer boots to be lighter and stronger while improving traction. These new materials also evolved the ability to now produce a variety of colors.
Technically categorized as an indoor soccer shoe, our N-100 style features a gum rubber flat outsole. Created for style, the shoe can also fluidly be utilized for playing indoor soccer in a gym or recreational facility. Leisure or for streetwear, the N-100 is handcrafted with a lower snug, profile fit to resemble an athletic yet lightweight sneaker that is functional and fashionable.
Now utilizing protection, performance and style, the traditional soccer boot is a revolutionary design that has inspired us to continue its legacy into today.
